“Ugly” organic produce delivery from Misfits Market makes it easier than ever to eat healthy on a budget, and you don’t even have to go grocery shopping! Use Misfits Market promo code link below for 25% off your first box.
It’s finally happened: organic produce is cheaper – much cheaper – than conventional.
And you don’t even have to do the shopping.
Go ahead and pinch yourself. (I had to.)
How to get organic produce for cheap
Like most moms, I always feel a tinge of guilt when I buy conventional produce instead of organic. Also like most moms, splurging on groceries isn’t always an option.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at conventional and organic avocados side-by-side, and debate the $1 vs $3 price tag. Sure, that one purchase for $2 more isn’t a big deal on its own, but when you add up a grocery cart full of items with each item’s organic markup, the price difference overall is significant.
For the most part, I settled on buying organic items when they were on sale and assumed I was doing the best I could. That is, until I stumbled upon a post in my town’s Facebook group about Misfits Market, an ugly produce delivery company.
What is “Ugly” Organic Produce Delivery?
Simply put, ugly organic produce delivery is like winning an organic groceries lottery ticket. But, you probably want to know a little more than that. ????
Turns out, there’s a lot of organic, farm-fresh produce that doesn’t get picked up by large buyers like grocery stores. Grocery stores get choosy about what they’ll take from farmers because grocery shoppers are picky. This means that farmers are stuck with imperfect, or “ugly”, produce they can’t sell: things like carrots that grow entwined together, sweet potatoes that are too big or turnips that are too small. Other times, a buyer can simply change their mind, leaving a farmer with perfect produce that’s all dressed up and nowhere to go.
Some of this banished produce goes to food banks, but as much as 50% of all produce grown in the US goes to waste. Ugly organic produce delivery companies like Misfits Market “rescue” this organic food and deliver it to you for much less than you’d ever pay in-store.
Benefits of Getting an Organic Ugly Produce Delivery Subscription
My box from Misfits Market is at least 10-12 pounds of produce (and as high as 15 pounds) for $23.50, DELIVERED. Even if you include the flat $4.50 delivery fee in the total cost to calculate a dollar-per-pound cost, it’s crazy cheap and seriously cheaper than even conventional produce from stores like Trader Joe’s.
No making grocery lists and no shopping! Even better, most services, including the one I use, Misfits Market, let you choose your delivery day. If you need to skip a week, you can do that too.
Tip: I select to receive mine on Fridays so we have opportunity to eat through any “delicate” items like salad stuff over the weekend when my husband is home. It’s also when I have the most time to cook (and get help with our toddler) so I can meal prep for the week!
I swear that receiving and opening my ugly produce box is as exciting as Christmas morning. Maybe it’s the thrill of the deal, but I also love the surprise of what new foods I get to cook with and try this week. It’s fun!!
Scientists are increasingly discovering that our gut health is linked to everything from inflammation, depression and anxiety and most illness and disease. One strategy to improve gut health is by increasing the variety of whole foods in our diet, especially fruits and vegetables. Most people tend to buy the same groceries over and over out of habit, but your organic delivery box service is sure to send you some produce you don’t normally buy!
Even as a food lover and confident home cook, there were several items in my last couple boxes I have either never tried or never cook at home: golden beets, turnips, starfruit, and mustard greens.
If you subscribe through Misfits Market, all of the produce is organic. Organic produce is free from things like nasty chemicals and pesticides, which makes you feel good eating it and serving it to your family, especially kids! (On occasion, if they rescue something conventional, they package it as such and don’t include that item toward your box weight limit. They simply don’t want food going to waste.)
Support farmers and help stop food waste.
An ugly produce subscription makes it automatic and easy to play a small part to support local farmers and keep perfectly fresh and healthy food from going into the trash.
What you get in an ugly produce delivery box
My Misfits Market subscription is for the “Mischief” box, the 10-12ish pound box or organic produce that’s suitable for 1-3 people to eat for one week.
With a subscription, this box is $19 a week + a flat $4.50 delivery charge. Save even more and get 25% off your first box with this link!
Is the produce really that ugly?
No! The “ugliest” produce I’ve received is some carrots entwined together. Other than that, nothing’s had noticeable blemishes.
Size-wise, we did receive two, 3.5 pound (each!) sweet potatoes. Not mad about it, though!
